How a Standby Generator Works
Your standby generator is permanently installed outdoors, similar to an air-conditioning unit, and runs on your home's existing fuel source: natural gas or liquid propane. The system comes with two main parts, the generator and the automatic transfer switch (ATS).
The ATS continually monitors the power coming from your utility. The moment it senses an interruption, it automatically starts the generator, transfers your home's electrical load, and restores power, usually within seconds. When utility power returns, the ATS switches back and shuts the generator down, all without you lifting a finger.
